Italian wine guide — where to start
A short introduction to Italian wine — the regions, grapes and labels that are worth learning.
Italian wine in brief
Italy is the world’s largest wine producer. From north to south the country covers more than 350 official grape varieties and 20 wine regions — from Aosta down to Sicily.
What to look for on a label
- DOC / DOCG — controlled designation of origin, higher quality tier.
- IGT — geographic indication, more flexible, often great value.
- Annata — vintage year, important for tannic reds.
A starter trio
Puglia primitivo, Tuscan sangiovese, Piedmont nebbiolo. Those three give you the broadest first look at the Italian wine spectrum.
