DOP and IGP Olive Oil
European quality marks DOP and IGP on olive oil: what they mean and why they matter.
DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) and IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) are European Union quality marks that protect regional food products.
For DOP olive oil, olives must be grown and oil produced in a specific geographic area, following strict regulations. Italy has over 40 DOP olive oils, such as Chianti Classico DOP and Terra di Bari DOP.
IGP is slightly more flexible — it requires that at least one production step takes place in the named region. Both marks ensure traceability and quality.
