Umbria is called the green heart of Italy and is one of the oldest olive oil producing regions. The region's oils are intense and distinctive.
The main cultivars are Moraiolo, Frantoio and San Felice. Umbrian oil is often more intense and peppery than Tuscan, with strong green and artichoke notes.
Umbria DOP includes subtypes such as Colli Assisi-Spoleto, Colli Martani and Colli del Trasimeno. The Spoleto area's oils are especially highly regarded.
